Main purpose of job:

We are looking for a responsible, organised, safety-conscious and proactive Driver and Administrative Support Officer for our Embassy, to support the Ambassador and Embassy team through everyday work and delivery of UK priorities. They will do this by providing excellent, safe, timely and proactive driving support. Additionally, the role will include other driving support (eg delivering and collecting of packages, arranging vehicle maintenance etc).

When not providing transport for colleagues, the successful candidate will support the Embassy’s Corporate Service Team with administrative tasks to support the smooth running of the Embassy.

The ideal candidate will enjoy being behind the wheel, seeing new places and meeting new people. They will be a team player who is happy to help colleagues and learn new things.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Working in a busy environment, ensure key Embassy team (including Ambassador and Deputy Head of Mission) are driven to/from events, meetings, and engagements in a safe and timely fashion
  • Working closely with the Executive Assistant/Embassy teams to plan transport requirements
  • Looking smart and presentable when on duty, as per internal regulations for uniforms
  • Gaining knowledge and operating a wide variety of vehicles
  • Organising up-keep and maintenance of official Embassy vehicles; assisting other diplomatic staff with vehicle related administrative procedures
  • Assisting with planning and delivery of transport for particularly complex or high-profile events
  • Assisting with delivery of transport logistics for UK VIP visits (eg ministerial and senior officials)
  • Ensuring embassy vehicles are prepared, ready for use and always have a high level of cleanliness and safety
  • Keeping accurate mileage, fuel consumption and carbon footprint records
  • Maintaining the safety of vehicles and adhering to the traffic laws and regulations
  • Building and maintaining the network of key stakeholders at the Embassy and elsewhere to help the team effectively deliver high profile visits/events
  • Handling luggage in a secure manner
  • On foot hand deliveries in the vicinity of the office

This role would also include elements of office and administration support. The exact tasks will depend on team priorities but are likely to include elements of:
  • Office management
  • Admin support for Corporate Services
  • Ad hoc purchases and associated accounting for those purchases

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

Our Ideal Candidate shows: 

  • Proficiency in Croatian, minimum C1 level and minimum of B2 level of English
  • Valid EU driving licence & Clean driving record for at least two years
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a professional driver
  • Great professional driving skills and experience
  • Understanding a motor vehicle functionality / Familiarity with vehicle maintenance;
  • Ability to drive for extended periods
  • Ability to work under pressure and as part of a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to interact with senior colleagues
  • Absolute discretion and the ability to keep information seen or heard in confidence
  • Adaptability to the changes

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

Nice to have: 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, i.e. Outlook, Excel, Teams, Word, etc.
  • Experience of working for government/a diplomatic mission/international organisation and knowledge of protocol and handling of ministers etc.
  • Good knowledge of wider Zagreb/Croatia road/motorway system
  • Secure driving certificate

Other benefits and conditions of employment:

This is a full-time, permanent contract. The monthly salary for this position is €1510.89 gross + €47.78 transport allowance.

The position is based on a 39.5 hour working week. However, due to the nature of the work there is the requirement to work some irregular hours, particularly starting early and finishing late, during the working week. There may also be requirements for longer journeys, to work on weekends or stay overnight during official trips outside Zagreb. The successful candidate will be entitled to overtime payments for working additional hours as and when required.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background and security clearance and must have pre-existing work authorisation for Croatia in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Zagreb are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Croatian employment law.

Visa/Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Croatia.
